Scott McTominay is set to undergo heart surgery this week after Napoli confirmed that the midfielder has developed a “mild benign arrhythmia.”
The 29-year-old former Manchester United star is expected to miss several weeks while he undergoes treatment for the condition.
Napoli announced on Tuesday that McTominay will have a cardiac arrhythmia ablation using pulsed field ablation (PFA) in the coming days.
The club said in a statement: “Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days.
“He will be available again after the international break.”
An arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats irregularly or outside its normal rhythm. Treatment can include medication to control the heart rate and manage symptoms, while ablation may be recommended when medication is ineffective or unsuitable.
McTominay joined Napoli two years ago following his departure from Manchester United and has enjoyed a highly successful spell in Italy. During his first season, he was named Serie A’s Player of the Year after playing a key role in helping Napoli secure the league title.
