Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has claimed that the average Nigerian can survive on N3,000 a day, stressing that poverty levels should be assessed within the economic realities of individual countries.
Omokri made the claim while speaking on Sunday Politics, where he discussed the rising cost of living and the relevance of international poverty benchmarks to Nigeria.
He said he personally visited markets with a journalist to check the current prices of basic food items, including yam, rice, maize and fruits.
According to him, his findings showed that N3,000 could cover the daily needs of an average Nigerian.
Omokri contrasted Nigeria’s purchasing power with that of countries such as the United States, arguing that the same amount would be insufficient to meet basic needs there.
