Barcelona agree deal in excess of £69m for Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon

FC Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement with Newcastle United F.C. to sign winger Anthony Gordon in a deal valued at £69.3 million (€80 million), including add-ons.

The England international is expected to travel to Spain on Thursday for his medical ahead of completing the high-profile transfer before the upcoming World Cup.

Although FC Bayern Munich had previously shown strong interest in Gordon, the Bundesliga champions are no longer planning to submit a competing offer despite earlier hopes of adding him to an attacking lineup featuring Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Díaz.

The move comes after Gordon ended the season as Newcastle’s leading scorer with 18 goals. Interestingly, he remained an unused substitute in the club’s final four matches, reportedly as a precautionary measure to preserve his fitness ahead of the expected transfer.

Gordon had only signed a new long-term contract at St. James’ Park in October 2024, with four years still remaining on his deal. However, Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson previously acknowledged that the club may need to sell key players in order to finance their summer transfer plans.

The transfer could also impact the future of Marcus Rashford at Barcelona. The Manchester United F.C. loanee is said to be eager to remain at the club next season and is reportedly willing to accept a pay cut to secure a permanent stay.

However, Manchester United are not interested in negotiating another loan arrangement and believe their £26 million option-to-buy valuation is reasonable. With Gordon set to arrive, Rashford may now see the World Cup as a major opportunity to impress Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and the club’s hierarchy in a bid to secure his future at the Camp Nou.
