Legendary Green Eagles captain and former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, has passed away at the age of 74.

The news of his passing was announced on social media by his former teammate and fellow football icon, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, who shared a heartfelt tribute:

“I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s history, former captain and coach of the national team, has passed on. Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago. May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven, and may his family find comfort.”

Widely known as “Chairman”, Chukwu was a towering figure in Nigerian football, admired for his exceptional leadership and lasting impact on the sport. He captained the Green Eagles to their historic 1980 African Cup of Nations victory and later guided the Super Eagles as head coach, including leading the team to the semi-finals of the 2004 AFCON.

In 2021, false rumors of his death circulated widely, which he personally debunked during his 70th birthday celebration, assuring fans of his well-being at the time.

The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

Chukwu’s legacy in Nigerian football remains unmatched—both as a player and coach, he inspired generations and left an indelible mark on the nation’s sporting history.

May his soul rest in peace. Amen.
