Charles Bassey, a former Green Eagles defender and a key figure in Nigeria’s triumphant 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) team, has died after a prolonged illness.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the news in a statement released on Sunday.

Bassey passed away on Saturday, April 12, in his hometown of Eket, Akwa Ibom State, just hours after the death of another 1980 Eagles legend, Christian Chukwu. The back-to-back losses have deeply saddened the Nigerian football community, as it mourns two of the nation’s football icons from its golden generation.

In 2019, Bassey revealed he had been suffering from a spinal condition and nerve root compression caused by a 1986 car accident. Over time, his condition deteriorated, affecting his mobility and prompting an appeal for medical assistance. In 2021, he acknowledged the support of the Femi Otedola Foundation, which sponsored a critical spinal surgery.

Beyond his playing career, Bassey made significant contributions to Nigerian football as a coach. He managed several clubs in the domestic league, including Calabar Rovers, Wikki Tourists, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingos, Mobil Pegasus, and Akwa United. His influence on Nigerian football extended far beyond the pitch, shaping teams and mentoring players for decades.

With Bassey’s passing, nine members of the historic 1980 AFCON-winning team have now died. Others include Best Ogedegbe, Moses Effiong, Christian Chukwu, Okechukwu Isima, Tunde Bamidele, Aloysius Atuegbu, Mudashiru Lawal, and Martins Eyo. His death marks yet another painful reminder of the gradual fading of a generation that helped shape the legacy of Nigerian football.
