The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has secured the conviction of four individuals involved in illegal tree felling in Sharada Municipal.

The ministry announced the development in a statement posted on its social media platforms on Monday, August 25.

Among the convicted is Jibril Adamu and three others, who were found guilty after a thorough legal process.

According to the statement, “The defendants were prosecuted by Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu under the Kano State Forestry Law, which prohibits cutting down trees without authorization. The case was heard at Court 2, Normansland, before His Worship Auwalu Yusuf.

“After reviewing the evidence, the court sentenced each defendant to three months imprisonment or an option to pay a ₦40,000 fine. Additionally, they were ordered to pay ₦50,000 as compensation for the environmental damage caused.”

The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, described the verdict as a landmark ruling, stressing that illegal tree felling threatens the state’s afforestation efforts and environmental sustainability.

“Every tree cut illegally deprives our city of clean air, shade, and climate resilience. This ruling sends a clear message that Kano will not tolerate environmental vandalism,” he stated.

The ministry urged residents to report cases of illegal logging and other environmental violations through its official website.
