Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Gbenga Daniel, has dismissed rumours that Senate President Godswill Akpabio is hospitalised in London.

In a statement released on Monday, August 11, by Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, it was confirmed that Senator Daniel met with the Senate President in London during a stopover. The visit was to inform Akpabio of his intention to return to Nigeria for the upcoming bye-election in the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North federal constituency, Ogun State, scheduled for August 16.

The seat became vacant following the death of Hon. Adewumi Onanuga, the former Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives.

“I’m here to formally inform you, Mr. Senate President, that I’ll be returning to Nigeria to participate in the August 16 bye-election in the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North federal constituency, which became vacant after the passing of Hon. Onanuga,” Daniel reportedly said. “There are rumours that you’ve been unwell, but seeing you now clearly shows otherwise. Congratulations, Your Excellency.”

In response, Akpabio thanked Daniel for the visit and expressed optimism about the All Progressives Congress (APC) retaining the seat.

“With the support of Governor Dapo Abiodun, yourself, and other party stakeholders in Ogun State, I’m confident we’ll retain the House of Representatives seat. Let me congratulate you in advance — you have what it takes to secure that victory for our great party,” Akpabio said.

Addressing the speculation around his health, the Senate President added pointedly: “If you listen to the social media, you will go to war.”
