The Ondo State Government has confirmed 12 cases of monkeypox, also known as Mpox, across eight local government areas of the state.
Victor Adefesoye, Director of Disease Control at the Ondo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (OSPHCDA), made the announcement on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting on Mpox vaccination in Akure.
“The disease is present in Ondo State, particularly in the following LGAs: Akoko South-West, Akoko North-West, Akoko North-East, Owo, Akure South, Akure North, Ondo East, and Odigbo,” Adefesoye stated.
He revealed that a state-wide vaccination campaign will run from August 11 to 21, targeting individuals aged 18 and above. The campaign will also prioritize close contacts of confirmed cases and healthcare workers who have treated infected persons.
“We will vaccinate those who already have the disease, their close contacts, and health workers involved in their care,” Adefesoye said. “While some people may be hesitant, we urge all stakeholders to encourage eligible individuals to receive the vaccine.”
He emphasized that the Mpox vaccine is safe, free, and administered in two doses at different intervals. Adefesoye also called on residents to uphold personal and environmental hygiene to support disease prevention and community health.
