The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State by three days, moving the deadline from July 17 to July 20.
This extension was announced following the commission’s weekly meeting at its Abuja headquarters, as stated in a press release on Thursday, July 17, by Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
Olumekun explained that the decision was made in response to numerous requests from citizens and stakeholders seeking more time to complete their registration. He praised the peaceful conduct and high turnout at all 326 registration centres across the state.
Within the first nine days of the exercise, INEC recorded 96,085 new voter registrations, averaging over 10,600 per day. Additionally, 12,595 transfer applications and 7,061 requests for PVC updates or replacements were submitted.
Preliminary data revealed strong engagement from women and young voters, with females accounting for 56,017 (58%) of new registrants and youths aged 18 to 34 making up 50,429 (52.48%).
After the registration period ends, INEC will publish a preliminary voter register for public review, allowing claims and objections as mandated by the Electoral Act. The data will then be cleaned using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) before the final demographic breakdown is released.
Olumekun also noted that five new letters of intent from groups seeking registration as political parties have been received, bringing the total applications to 134. Details about these applications—including party names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership—are available on INEC’s official platforms.
INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency and timely communication as preparations continue for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8.
