With the 2027 general elections approaching, Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the Senate, has officially announced her defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Kingibe described the move as a deliberate and strategic political decision. She affirmed her full commitment to the ADC and revealed plans to mark her formal induction with public celebration.
“I’m totally and completely committed to ADC,” she said. “As the senator representing the FCT, don’t expect me to just take a lunch break and quietly pick up a membership card. I want to do it with noise and fanfare.”
Addressing questions about the ADC’s leadership and political prospects, Kingibe expressed confidence in the party’s future, likening its current phase to early development.
“It’s something that is evolving,” she noted. “You don’t judge a child who’s still crawling for not running. We are growing.”
She also stressed that her defection is constitutionally justified, citing the existence of two rival factions within the Labour Party.
“If there weren’t two distinct factions in the Labour Party, I wouldn’t consider defecting, because that would be unconstitutional,” she explained. “But the split is real, and that meets the constitutional requirement. I’ve simply chosen ADC.”
