Lagos State Government Moves to Clamp Down on Unlicensed Skincare Producers

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to regulate and curb the activities of unqualified individuals operating in the fields of aesthetic medicine and skincare.

This was revealed by the State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, during the 19th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists (NAD).

“There is a global surge in aesthetic dermatology, and Lagos is no exception,” Abayomi stated. “As a government, we are deeply concerned about the growing number of unqualified individuals posing as experts in aesthetic skincare.”

He warned that many of these unlicensed practitioners offer treatments that could be harmful to public health.

To address the issue, the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), the regulatory arm of the Ministry of Health, has begun investigating the rise in unregulated aesthetic practices across the state.

“We intend to collaborate closely with NAD, the recognized body of experts in dermatology, to clearly define the boundaries for these unqualified practitioners,” the Commissioner said. “Our goal is to ensure that such activities are properly monitored and that residents are protected from the risks associated with unprofessional and unsafe skincare treatments.”
