Liverpool have submitted a bid worth close to £110 million in an ambitious move to sign German midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Premier League champions have emerged as frontrunners for the 22-year-old’s signature, following the withdrawal of both Bayern Munich and Manchester City from the race to sign him this summer.

New Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is believed to have made a strong impression on Wirtz during a recent meeting, reportedly convincing the playmaker that Anfield—and its passionate fanbase—is the perfect next step in his career. According to *Bild*, Slot also laid out a clear tactical vision for Wirtz, promising him a central role in Liverpool’s attacking setup.

Despite Liverpool’s substantial offer, Bayer Leverkusen are said to be holding out for around £126 million for their prized asset, who has dazzled in both the Bundesliga and Europe over the past two seasons.

Sporting director Richard Hughes is leading negotiations to bring Wirtz to Merseyside. The German international had a sensational campaign last season with 18 goals and 20 assists, and has continued his fine form this term, contributing 16 goals and 15 assists. Still only 22, Wirtz already boasts 29 senior caps for Germany.

If completed, the transfer would eclipse Liverpool’s current record signing—Darwin Núñez—who joined from Benfica in 2022 for £85 million.
