Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has called on Nigerians to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general election, describing the PVC as a vital weapon against election rigging and poor leadership.

In a statement titled “PVC is the Bridge to a New Nigeria”, Obi urged citizens to treat their PVCs as a powerful instrument of change. He warned against vote-selling, describing it as a dangerous exchange that empowers corrupt politicians and weakens the nation’s future.

“Today, I want to plead with every Nigerian, young and old, to heed this call to action. The future of our dear nation is in your hands. The greatest strength of democracy is in the voter’s card,” he said.

Obi described the PVC as “the voice of the voiceless, the shield of the weak, and the weapon of the poor for a better life, against injustice and bad leadership.” He emphasized that only an informed and active electorate can prevent electoral malpractice.

On vote-buying, Obi warned:
“Those who buy votes are not doing you a favour; they are investing in their own corruption. They buy votes to gain access to public funds, which they eventually loot. The money that should be used to build schools, improve healthcare, and create jobs is stolen. These are not leaders — they are criminals in disguise.”

He added that selling one’s vote is equivalent to selling the nation’s future:
“You are not just trading a ballot; you are trading the education your children deserve, the hospitals your family needs, and the jobs that could transform your life. That single vote could be the key to a better life — don’t sell it.”

Obi reiterated that meaningful change can only come through the ballot box and urged Nigerians to take their civic duty seriously.

“Our democracy is at stake. That is why I urge every eligible Nigerian to register, collect, and safeguard your PVC. When the time comes, use it wisely. Vote for leaders with competence, character, capacity, and compassion. Do not be intimidated, do not be deceived, and do not be bought,” he said.

He concluded by reminding citizens that real power rests not in the hands of corrupt politicians, but in the votes of the people:
“Let us not trade our future for temporary handouts. It’s time to take our country back — one vote at a time.”
