The Benue State Police Command has debunked reports of a fresh herdsmen attack in Wannue Town, located in Tarka Local Government Area, on the night of Friday, June 20.

In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, the police described the circulating reports as “entirely false and misleading,” urging the public to disregard the claims.

“On the evening of June 21, at about 8 p.m., the police received a report that one Aondohemba Yayough was shot dead along Akume Road in Wannue,” Edet stated.

According to the police, a team of detectives was immediately dispatched to the scene. Eyewitnesses identified the alleged attacker as Saater Aii, a known ex-convict. Local security operatives reportedly managed to disarm the suspect, but he fled the scene.

Two other individuals sustained injuries during the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.

The police recovered an AK-47 rifle believed to have been used in the attack and confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fugitive suspect.

“There is no evidence of herdsmen involvement in the incident,” the statement emphasized. “We urge the public to ignore misinformation and rely only on verified sources for accurate updates.”
