The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has launched a full-scale investigation after a convicted armed robber, Haruna Ayo, was discovered attempting to process a passport and visa at the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) office in FESTAC Town, Lagos.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 19, when Ayo, an inmate of Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre, was taken to the passport office under suspicious circumstances. According to Punch, Ayo is currently serving a 21-year sentence—reduced from life imprisonment—for armed robbery, with a scheduled release date of October 11, 2025.
Reports indicate Ayo had been selected, along with four other inmates, to carry out domestic chores at the residence of the officer in charge of the facility. During the outing, a subordinate officer—allegedly acting on instructions from a superior—diverted Ayo to the NIS office.
While awaiting service at the immigration office, a comment made by the escorting officer raised suspicion. “I need to take him back to the cell,” the officer reportedly said, prompting immigration staff to alert authorities. Both the inmate and the officer were detained, and the matter was escalated to the NCoS Lagos Command at Alagbon.
In response, at least two correctional officers, including one identified as Femi, have been suspended pending further investigation.
Sources suggest Ayo had previously used scheduled medical appointments as a cover to leave the prison and pursue travel documentation. Despite claiming a serious health condition, three separate medical assessments reportedly found him fit.
“The real issue is systemic,” a source told the publication. “This isn’t just about one or two officers—many people were involved.”
The hospital allegedly providing cover for the unauthorized outings is also under investigation for possible complicity.
