President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for an official trip to Japan and Brazil, with a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
According to a statement by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday, August 13, the President’s first destination will be Japan, where he will attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama from August 20 to 22.
Under the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” TICAD9 aims to advance Africa’s economic transformation by improving business environments and institutions through private investment and innovation. The conference also focuses on building a resilient and sustainable African society grounded in human security, peace, and stability.
Besides participating in plenary sessions, President Tinubu will hold bilateral meetings and engage with CEOs of Japanese companies investing in Nigeria.
TICAD, launched in 1993 by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, is held every three years, alternating between Japan and Africa. The previous conference took place in Tunisia in August 2022.
Following the Japan engagement, President Tinubu will travel to Brasília, Brazil, for a two-day state visit from Sunday, August 24, to Monday, August 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
During his visit, President Tinubu will meet bilaterally with President Lula da Silva and attend a business forum with Brazilian investors. His delegation, including key ministers and senior officials, will explore opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation and sign agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Brazilian government.
