Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has charged newly elected local government chairmen in the state to discharge their responsibilities with diligence and integrity, warning them against using public office as a means of accumulating wealth.
Nwifuru gave the charge on Wednesday in Abakaliki while unveiling a three-day capacity-building workshop for the newly elected council chairmen.
The governor urged the chairmen to carefully consider the consequences of their decisions in office, noting that their actions would ultimately shape the legacy they leave behind.
“You must be mindful of the decisions you take in office because your actions today will determine the legacy you leave behind. Do not allow anybody to mislead you into doing what is wrong. Public office is not an avenue to become wealthy overnight,” he said.
Nwifuru further urged them to ensure that public funds were handled lawfully, transparently and accountably.
“Whatever you do with public funds must be lawful, transparent, and accountable. Stand firm, remain resilient in the face of criticism, and keep your primary responsibility focused on serving the people,” he added.
