Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has expressed his willingness to reconcile with the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sim Fubara, on the condition that Fubara offers a genuine apology for the political crisis in the state.
Wike and Fubara have been at odds since Fubara assumed office in 2023, with their growing political rift eventually splitting the state’s House of Assembly into two rival factions. As tensions escalated and security in the state deteriorated, President Bola Tinubu intervened by declaring a state of emergency. He suspended Governor Fubara for six months and appointed a sole administrator to manage the state’s affairs.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, April 18, Wike questioned the sincerity of efforts to resolve the crisis and stressed the importance of honest dialogue.
“Has anyone genuinely made an effort? I don’t like hypocrisy,” Wike remarked. “I’ve asked [an unnamed individual]to name one elder in Rivers State who has made a real attempt to foster peace.”
He continued, “At the end of the day, if no progress is made, we’ll be back to square one, and that makes no sense. The moment Mr. President intervened, the Assembly members immediately withdrew their impeachment notice. I’m open to forgiveness—if he comes sincerely.”
