The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has declared that 25 political associations have submitted applications for registration as political parties in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Mr. Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, revealed this on behalf of the INEC Chairman during the Public Presentation of the ‘NEEDS Assessment of Political Parties in Nigeria,’ organized by the Kukah Centre and the European Union (EU).

He stated, “Despite the severe criticism that INEC has faced, especially in the last few months, we have the National Assembly that emerged from the political parties. There was a time when we had many political parties before they were reduced to 19 due to legal requirements.”

“As of today, we have approximately 25 political associations that have applied to register as political parties. If political parties are not functioning well, why are groups coming forward to seek registration as political parties?” Olumekun questioned.
