Trump vs Senator: US President tells Chuck Schumer to ‘go to HELL’

The U.S. Senate adjourned Saturday night, August 2, for its monthlong August recess without reaching an agreement to advance dozens of President Donald Trump’s nominees. The move followed days of tense bipartisan negotiations, culminating in Trump’s fiery social media post telling Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to “GO TO HELL!”

According to CNN, Senate Republican Leader John Thune, Schumer, and White House officials were engaged in intense talks aimed at breaking the stalemate before the recess. Schumer reportedly demanded the release of frozen federal funds and a commitment from Trump not to pursue additional legislation to cut federal spending. Trump rejected these demands online, labeling them “egregious and unprecedented,” signaling the collapse of negotiations.

Initially, Trump insisted that the Senate confirm his nominees before the recess—even threatening to cancel it—but his social media outburst indicated he was no longer willing to compromise.

In a tweet, Trump wrote: “Tell Schumer, who is under tremendous political pressure from within his own party—the Radical Left Lunatics—to GO TO HELL! Do not accept the offer, go home and explain to your constituents what bad people the Democrats are, and what a great job the Republicans are doing for our Country. Have a great RECESS.”

On the Senate floor, Thune sought unanimous consent to vote on several nominations before the recess began, but Democrats, who had been stalling several lower-level nominees, maintained procedural blocks.

Schumer’s conditions for a faster confirmation process included unfreezing federal funds for programs like the National Institutes of Health and foreign aid. He also sought assurances that Trump would not push another round of spending cuts via a “rescissions” package after a $9 billion cut earlier in the year.

At a news conference, Schumer said Democrats remained committed to bipartisan solutions but accused Trump of abandoning negotiations.

“In a fit of rage, Trump threw in the towel, sent Republicans home, and failed to do the basic work of negotiating. Is this the ‘Art of the Deal’?” Schumer asked, holding up a printout of Trump’s post.

Though he did not reveal all details of the discussions, Schumer said progress had been made on several fronts before Trump abruptly ended the talks.
