Unknown gunmen attacked an ambulance along the Egbe-Ogbe-Ponyan road in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State on Saturday, January 25, killing the director, Segun Adekoya.

Adekoya and his team were returning to Egbe in Yagba East after officiating at a funeral in the Ponyan community. They had transported a body from a hospital in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area, for burial in Ponyan when the attack occurred.

“The undertaker group led by Segun Adekoya was well-respected in the community for its exceptional service at funeral ceremonies. He had recently purchased a fully-equipped ambulance on December 24, 2024, with support from the community to improve his work,” said Ademola Ganiyu, a resident of Egbe.

On Saturday morning, Adekoya and his team successfully completed the burial in Ponyan. After fixing a flat tire on their return, they were ambushed by about 30 armed men. While his team members managed to escape, Adekoya, who had a past leg injury that left him with limited mobility, was unable to flee.

His lifeless body was discovered the following morning, after local farmers raised an alarm upon finding it by the roadside.

The state police command has not yet issued a statement on the incident.
