The US Secret Service shot a man following an armed confrontation near the White House early Sunday morning, March 9.

The incident occurred just minutes from the White House, sparking concerns as law enforcement agents responded to a potential threat, according to multiple US media reports.

The confrontation took place near the intersection of 17th Street and F Street NW, about a five-minute walk from the White House.

Earlier reports from DC police had indicated that a “suicidal individual” possibly traveling from Indiana was being tracked, leading authorities to locate the man’s vehicle near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is adjacent to the White House.

US Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi stated that when officers approached the vehicle, the suspect “brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel.” He added, “Thankfully, no injuries were reported among Secret Service agents.”

The man was taken to the hospital following the shooting, but his condition remains unclear.

“The status of the individual is currently unknown,” the Secret Service confirmed.
