Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has stated that he owes no one an explanation regarding the peace deal reached with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, emphasizing that the key outcome is the restoration of peace in Rivers State.
Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Wike addressed questions about his recent reconciliation with Fubara, which followed months of intense political tension threatening to destabilize the oil-rich state.
The dispute between the two leaders had sparked a major political crisis in Rivers State, drawing national attention and prompting intervention from prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, who reportedly helped broker the truce.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and influential leader within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), accused unnamed individuals of exploiting the conflict for personal gain, describing the crisis as an “oil well” that enriched them.
“Those benefiting from the crisis are unhappy that we have made peace,” Wike said. “They were busy collecting money here and there, fueling problems just to line their pockets.”
He stressed that he owes no one an explanation about the reconciliation’s details, insisting that what matters most is the return of stability to the state.
Wike’s comments come amid ongoing speculation about possible political concessions made to secure the truce. Nonetheless, he remained unfazed by such discussions, highlighting that the people of Rivers State stand to benefit the most from the conflict’s resolution.
