Former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has downplayed the recent wave of political defections in Nigeria’s Northwest, arguing that they are driven more by personal interests than the welfare of the people.
Speaking to journalists after the inaugural Zonal Executive Council Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northwest in Kaduna on Saturday, February 15, Tambuwal criticized those defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming their decisions are self-serving.
“People leave parties for various reasons, but what I’ve observed is that these defections are not driven by the interests of the people; rather, they are about personal gains, what I refer to as ‘stomach infrastructure,’” he said.
Tambuwal also targeted the APC-led federal government, accusing it of poor governance and failing to address the country’s economic challenges.
“If you are a politician with a conscience, you wouldn’t join the APC given the current economic hardship and the poor performance of the Tinubu administration,” he stated.
He urged opposition parties to unite and prepare for the 2027 elections to present Nigerians with a viable alternative.
“There is nothing appealing in the APC beyond personal benefits. Those of us who believe in this country and in serving the people must come together to ensure that by 2027, we remove this administration that has failed Nigerians,” Tambuwal concluded.
