Dangote: Powerful Cabals Still Working Against Our Refinery

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has revealed that a powerful “cabal” within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector is still working to undermine the progress of his $20 billion refinery project.

Speaking at an investor forum in Lagos on Friday, May 2, Africa’s richest man said he remains resolute in his mission, despite ongoing resistance. His comments were reported by international news outlet Semafor.

“For a very, very long time, those who profited immensely from government-subsidised fuel imports have been the ones trying to sabotage the $20 billion refinery in Lekki, Lagos,” Dangote stated.

He further claimed that these groups are actively opposing both the smooth operation of the refinery and the federal government’s decision, under President Bola Tinubu, to eliminate fuel subsidies.

Despite the challenges, Dangote expressed confidence in his ability to prevail. “We’re fighting, and the fight is not yet finished. But I’ve been fighting all my life, and I’m ready. I’m 100 percent sure I will win in the end,” he said.

The Dangote Refinery began selling petrol in September 2024, contributing to a noticeable decline in Nigeria’s fuel imports.
