PDP Zoning Committee Backs Southern Presidency, Confirms Damagum as National Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South. The decision was ratified during a closed-door session at the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on August 25.

Unlike in 2023, when the ticket was open to contenders from all regions, the PDP has now resolved—on the recommendation of its founding members—that its next presidential candidate must come from the South. Party insiders said the move was the result of a broad consensus aimed at balancing regional interests and rebuilding trust within the party.

In a related development, the NEC also confirmed Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as the party’s substantive National Chairman.

Party officials noted that Damagum’s ratification is expected to restore internal stability, provide leadership clarity, and better position the PDP ahead of its upcoming national convention, which has faced repeated delays due to procedural challenges.
