Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the member representing Tudun Wada/Doguwa federal constituency in the House of Representatives, has announced that traditional rulers will be given defined roles in the ongoing 1999 constitutional reform process.

Speaking on Tuesday, August 26, during the 2025 International Hausa Day celebration in Daura, Katsina State, Doguwa revealed that a proposal to formalize the role of traditional rulers is already before the constitutional reform committee.

“Given the vital role traditional rulers have played in this country, as a member of the House of Representatives, we are actively considering their constitutional recognition,” Doguwa said. “Traditional rulers, even before colonial times, have been instrumental in maintaining peace, security, and local governance. It is important to enshrine their rightful place in the constitution.”

Doguwa, who also holds the title Sardaunan Kasar Hausa Mai Tuta, praised the event’s organisers, noting that the celebration fosters unity among Hausa speakers worldwide.

The 2025 International Hausa Day is being held at the Emir of Daura’s palace. First celebrated on social media in 2015, the event has grown into a global observance every August 26, though it has yet to receive official recognition from the United Nations.

Daura, the hometown of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, was selected for this year’s celebration due to its historical significance as the birthplace of the Hausa people and language, and the foundation of the modern Hausa states.
