The Federal Government has officially revoked the 5% excise tax previously levied on telecommunications services in Nigeria—a decision aimed at reducing cost pressures for millions of mobile users.

Initially introduced under the Buhari administration, the tax applied to both voice calls and data usage but faced widespread opposition from telecom operators and consumer rights groups.

Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida, confirmed that President Bola Tinubu ordered the tax removal during recent deliberations on the newly enacted Finance Act.

The policy shift is expected to provide relief to over 171 million active telecom subscribers nationwide, many of whom have already been impacted by a 50% tariff hike earlier this year.
