The General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Véron Mosengo-Omba, has stepped down from his role amid mounting controversy surrounding the decision to strip Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

In a statement issued on Sunday, March 29, 2026, from Cairo, Egypt, Mosengo-Omba announced that his resignation takes immediate effect, bringing to an end a career spanning more than 30 years, as he plans to focus on personal pursuits.

The 66-year-old had faced criticism for remaining in office beyond CAF’s mandatory retirement age of 63. He was also accused by some staff of fostering a toxic work environment, although a subsequent investigation cleared him of any wrongdoing.

Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and also a Swiss national, Mosengo-Omba was appointed CAF General Secretary in March 2021.

In his resignation letter, he expressed optimism about CAF’s future under the leadership of President Dr. Patrice Motsepe.

“After more than 30 years in an international career dedicated to promoting football as a force for unity, education, and opportunity, I have decided to step down as CAF Secretary General to focus on personal projects,” he said.

“Having addressed and dispelled the suspicions raised against me, I leave with peace of mind and no constraints, confident that CAF is in a stronger position than ever,” he added.

“I extend my sincere gratitude to CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, my colleagues, and everyone who has contributed to the growth and progress of African football. I hope the achievements made will continue to endure.”
