Michael Carrick has been confirmed as Manchester United’s permanent head coach after guiding the club back into the Champions League.

The former United midfielder initially took charge in January on an interim basis following Ruben Amorim’s departure, but the club have now handed him the role full-time after an impressive run of results.

Under Carrick, United have won 11 of 16 matches, drawing three and losing just twice. His tenure began with four consecutive victories and included commanding wins over Manchester City and Arsenal.

When Carrick arrived, United were sitting seventh in the Premier League. However, Sunday’s dramatic 3-2 victory against Nottingham Forest secured third place with one match remaining.

His coaching staff — Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion — are also expected to sign new deals.

Speaking after the announcement, Carrick said: “From the moment I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United.

“To lead this special football club is an enormous honour and a responsibility I carry with great pride.

“Over the last five months, the players have shown the resilience, unity and determination expected at this club.

“Now we move forward together with ambition and a clear purpose. Manchester United and our supporters deserve to compete for the biggest trophies once again.”
