Akpabio:Senators Not in Office for Financial Gain

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has emphasized that lawmakers are in the Senate to make sacrifices for the nation’s future, not for personal financial gain.

Akpabio made the statement on Tuesday, July 9, during a debate on the general principles of a bill seeking to amend the Electricity Act, 2023.

The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Electricity Act, 2023, and for Related Matters, 2025 (SB. 862),” aims to address emerging challenges in the power sector. It seeks to enhance policy and regulatory coordination, improve sectoral financing, protect critical infrastructure, redefine host community engagement, and clarify the ongoing transition of intrastate electricity regulation from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to state authorities.

Speaking on the bill, Akpabio stressed the importance of power to national development, stating that industrial growth is impossible without a reliable electricity supply.

“People think we are here in the Senate to make money, not knowing that we are here to sacrifice for future generations,” he said.

He added that Nigerians are eager to see a complete transformation of the electricity sector to drive economic growth and improve living standards.

If passed and signed into law, the amended legislation is expected to resolve regulatory overlaps between federal and state governments, particularly concerning the national grid and intrastate power matters.
