Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi have congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his victory in the Osun State governorship election.

The two opposition leaders separately reacted to Adeleke’s re-election in posts on their respective X accounts, commending the people of Osun State and highlighting the importance of the election to Nigeria’s democracy.

Atiku described the result as a reflection of the will of the people as expressed through their votes.

“I congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election as Governor of Osun State. His victory demonstrates the choice of the people of Osun as expressed at the ballot box,” Atiku said.

He also commended voters for their enthusiasm and peaceful participation in the election, while wishing Adeleke success during his second term.

“I commend the people for their passion and peaceful participation. I wish Governor Adeleke continued success as he continues to serve them,” he added.

In his reaction, titled “Osun: When the People Stand, Democracy Wins,” Obi said the election demonstrated the power of citizens to determine their leaders.

He noted that Adeleke’s performance and commitment had earned him renewed confidence from the electorate, while particularly commending young voters for remaining vigilant in protecting their votes.

“The lesson from Osun is clear: democracy is strongest when citizens are alert, conscious of their civic responsibility, and determined to ensure that their votes count,” Obi said.

Obi urged Nigerians to remain actively engaged ahead of future elections by registering to vote, casting their ballots and protecting their votes. He also called on political leaders to put public interest first and embrace peaceful competition.

“Elections should never be battles of violence, but contests of ideas, competence, character, and service,” he added.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke the winner after he secured 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 444,815 votes.
