On Thursday, January 20, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva accused former U.S. President Donald Trump of attempting to “become an emperor of the world,” urging the U.S. to respect the sovereignty of other nations.
In an interview with a local radio station, Lula stated, “Post-World War II democracy has been an example of the best governance over the past 70 years,” but added, “the way Trump acts, he is trying to become an emperor of the world.” He further criticized Trump for trying to interfere in the affairs and public policies of other countries.
Lula’s comments followed Trump’s recent criticism of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he labeled a “dictator” and blamed for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Washington also angered both Kyiv and European leaders by engaging in direct talks with Russia in an attempt to end the war.
While Lula did not provide specific examples, he emphasized that Trump’s actions should reflect a respect for the sovereignty of every nation. The Brazilian president, who has not spoken with Trump since taking office in January, also reiterated the importance of the U.S. as a commercial partner for Brazil, calling for more “friendship” and an end to the protectionist policies, such as tariffs on Brazilian steel.
