Ademola Lookman delivered a crucial first-half goal that sent Atlético Madrid into the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday, sealing a 3–2 aggregate win over FC Barcelona.
Although Barcelona secured a 2–1 victory on the night at the Metropolitano Stadium, the deficit from the first leg proved too much to overturn, as Diego Simeone’s side held firm to knock out their domestic rivals.
The game started at a frantic pace, with Barcelona pushing hard to recover from their first-leg loss. Early strikes from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres silenced the home crowd and briefly leveled the tie on aggregate, swinging momentum toward the visitors.
However, Lookman responded at a crucial moment, scoring to restore Atlético’s aggregate advantage.
“When you play against a team like Barcelona, you have to take your chances,” Lookman said after the match. “We knew it would be a battle, but the belief in this squad is incredible.”
Barcelona’s comeback hopes suffered a major setback in the 79th minute when Eric García was sent off, reducing the visitors to 10 men once again in the tie.
With the numerical disadvantage, the task became too steep for Xavi Hernández’s team. At the final whistle, Julián Álvarez and his Atlético teammates celebrated their place in the last four of Europe’s top competition.
Atlético Madrid now joins Paris Saint-Germain, who defeated Liverpool FC in the other quarter-final on Tuesday, as the first teams to secure semi-final spots.
