Crime-fighting llamas catch thief and make heroic ‘citizen’s arrest’

A would-be thief in the United Kingdom saw his escape cut short by an unexpected group of guardians — a vigilant herd of llamas.

The incident unfolded on Monday evening in South Normanton, Derbyshire, after a man allegedly snatched tobacco from a woman and fled into nearby farmland. Attempting to evade capture, the suspect jumped a fence onto a farm off Carnfield Hill, where he was promptly confronted by eight llamas.

Known for their strong protective instincts, the animals charged at the intruder, chasing him across the field before surrounding him and effectively blocking any route of escape.

Farm owners Heidi Price and Graham Oliver were alerted by the llamas’ distinctive warning call. “This was after dusk,” Heidi explained. “Llamas don’t like people invading their space at night. They galloped over to him, formed a circle around him, and started making their warning noise — it sounds like an old man laughing.”

Her partner, Graham, rushed outside to find the man trapped in the middle of the field, encircled by the animals. According to Heidi, the suspect appeared “absolutely terrified,” a situation made even more intense when the farm dog joined in, barking at his feet. Graham then escorted the man back to the fence, where police officers were already waiting.

Heidi praised her herd’s discipline during the encounter, noting that none of the llamas spat despite the provocation. “They kept very good manners, even in adversity,” she said. The animals were rescued by the couple a decade ago from a farm that was closing, where they had been at risk of being put down.

Derbyshire Police later confirmed that a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of theft and released on police bail. Thanks to the llamas’ swift intervention, the escape attempt ended in what could only be described as an unconventional citizen’s arrest.
