Customs Warn Nigerians Against Misusing US Visa Entry

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urged Nigerians to refrain from misusing US visas, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the stated purposes of travel and visa classifications.

National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, issued the warning on Tuesday, July 29.

In a statement, Maiwada explained: “The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) wishes to alert the general public to concerns raised by the Government of the United States of America regarding the need for Nigerians to desist from misusing entry visas granted by the US through activities inconsistent with the stated purpose of travel and visa classification.”

The NCS reminded Nigerians that security screening for visa applicants continues even after entry into the United States. US authorities actively monitor visa holders’ activities, and visas may be revoked if holders violate US immigration rules, import/export regulations, or other laws.

Travelers to the US are also advised to declare any cash exceeding $10,000 (or equivalent) at points of entry or exit and to avoid carrying prohibited items in their baggage.

The statement further urged: “Passengers are encouraged to be law-abiding citizens and maintain good conduct both within and outside Nigeria. Anyone found committing fraud in any jurisdiction will face legal consequences under both US and Nigerian laws.”

The NCS reaffirmed its collaboration with the US Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria meets the criteria to avoid an expanded visa ban, which could restrict entry for genuine Nigerian travelers pursuing lawful business activities in the US.
