Amid the ongoing leadership dispute within the Labour Party (LP), the Julius Abure-led faction convened a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday, July 21, at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja. The gathering brought together key leaders and stakeholders.

Present at the meeting were factional National Chairman Julius Abure; National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk; National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh; National Youth Leader Ken Ahanotu; and Labour Party chairpersons from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Also in attendance was the party’s 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.

In his opening address, Abure reiterated his commitment to safeguarding the party’s integrity and principles.

“We have laboured to build this party, and under my leadership, the Labour Party will never be compromised,” he declared. “Our dedication was clearly demonstrated during the 2023 elections.” Despite facing both internal and external challenges, he noted that the party remained resilient and focused on delivering credible leadership to Nigerians.

Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed stressed the importance of unity and renewed focus as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.

“The Labour Party is not a party to walk away from. Its achievements cannot be overlooked,” he said. “We secured over 10 million votes, which were later reduced to 6 million — we all know the circumstances. I am here as a peacemaker. In the past, a coalition succeeded in voting out a sitting Nigerian government. That is the goal we aim to achieve in 2027.”

This NEC meeting takes place as the Labour Party continues to wrestle with deep internal divisions, with rival factions each claiming leadership of the party at the national level.
