The Super Falcons are set to have a new technical crew ahead of their 2028 Women’s Olympic qualifying campaign, which begins in October.
National Sports Commission Director-General Bukola Olopade disclosed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is expected to appoint a new coaching team after the federation asked coach Justine Madugu and his technical crew to step down following the team’s disappointing performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Olopade said the urgency to restructure the team is driven by Nigeria’s desire to qualify for the 2028 Olympics.
“The Olympics are around the corner, we will see how we can tweak the technical team of the Falcons like we did for the U-23, which coach Eric Chelle will handle. This is because we are desirous of qualifying for the Olympics,” he said.
The Super Falcons endured a difficult WAFCON campaign, starting with a 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in the group stage.
Nigeria’s campaign ended in the quarter-finals after a 1-0 loss to Cameroon on August 8, marking the team’s first quarter-final elimination in the competition.
The defeat also cost Nigeria automatic qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Falcons later had another opportunity to qualify through the African play-off but suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa, ending their hopes of featuring at the tournament.
