French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September—a landmark decision from one of Europe’s most influential powers.

The move places France among a growing number of nations supporting Palestinian statehood. According to AFP, at least 142 countries have already recognized or intend to recognize Palestine. However, the decision is expected to spark diplomatic tensions, with both the United States and Israel remaining firmly opposed.

Macron’s announcement comes amid intensifying global concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, triggered by Israel’s military offensive following the October 7, 2023, attacks.

Israel reacted sharply to the news. Deputy Prime Minister Yariv Levin condemned the decision as a “shameless” act, accusing France of offering “direct aid to terrorism.”

Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority official Hussein al-Sheikh praised the move, describing it as a reaffirmation of “international law” and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

In a statement shared on social media, President Macron said, “The urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and rescue the civilian population.” He underscored the importance of “finally building the State of Palestine,” under conditions that include demilitarization and mutual recognition with Israel to secure lasting peace and stability in the region.

France’s announcement follows similar recognitions by countries such as Norway, Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and several others outside Europe.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly in talks with French and German leaders, aiming to coordinate diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire that could open the path for wider recognition of Palestinian statehood.

The ongoing Gaza conflict has exacted a heavy human toll. According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 59,000 Palestinians—mostly civilians—have been killed in Israel’s campaign. The October 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel resulted in 1,219 deaths, also primarily civilians.
