The Nigerian Army has reported the tragic loss of 16 military personnel while on a peacekeeping mission to two conflicting communities in Delta State.
The personnel were ambushed and fatally attacked by youths while responding to a distress call amidst a communal clash between Okuama and Okoloba communities on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, March 16. He revealed that the personnel included a Lieutenant Colonel, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 soldiers.
“The troops of 181 Amphibious Battalion, stationed in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, were surrounded and attacked by youths from the Okuama community during a peacekeeping mission on Thursday, March 14, 2024,” the statement read.
“The unfortunate incident occurred as the troops responded to a distress call following a communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State. The reinforcement team, led by the Commanding officer, also faced the attack, resulting in the tragic loss of the Commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 Soldiers.
“General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has ordered an immediate investigation and arrest of those responsible for this heinous crime. The incident has been reported to the Delta State Government.
“Nevertheless, the military remains resolute and dedicated to its mandate of preserving peace and security in the nation. Some arrests have been made, and efforts are underway to uncover the motive behind this attack. Further details will be provided in due course.”
