‘That is enough’ – Ademola Lookman admits Super Eagles wanted to be kings of Africa

Ademola Lookman has disclosed that the Super Eagles went into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a strong determination to win the title.

Nigeria ended the tournament with a bronze medal after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties on Saturday night, with the Atalanta forward calmly converting the decisive spot kick. Prior to the semifinals, the three-time African champions were the only team with a flawless record, having won all five of their matches.

That impressive run, however, came to an end in dramatic fashion as Nigeria lost to tournament hosts Morocco in a penalty shootout, missing out on a place in the final. Despite being one of the favourites following an impressive group-stage display, the Super Eagles approached the third-place match with the aim of securing a podium finish.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS after the game, Lookman said winning the trophy had always been the team’s primary objective.

“Everyone wanted to win the gold medal. We came here to lift the trophy, but it didn’t happen. We leave the tournament with the bronze medal, and that is something we can accept,” he said.

Lookman was one of the standout performers at AFCON 2025, finishing the tournament with three goals and four assists — the highest combined tally of any player. His performances have placed him in contention for a spot in the tournament’s official best XI.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s overall showing, the winger said the team could take pride in its efforts. “It was a good competition for us. We scored many goals, created plenty of chances and played good football. We can be proud of what we achieved,” he said.

Lookman also highlighted the strong bond within the squad, noting, “There’s real unity in the team. We fought for each other, and I hope it continues.”

The bronze-medal finish marks the ninth time the Super Eagles have placed third at the Africa Cup of Nations, adding to similar finishes in 1976, 1978, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2019.
