Nine of the abducted female students from the Federal University in Gusau, Zamfara State, have regained their freedom, bringing some relief to their families and loved ones.

The abduction occurred on September 22, 2023, when suspected terrorists raided off-campus hostels near the Federal University in Sabon Gidan Community, kidnapping a total of twenty-four female students. Additionally, three male labourers registered with GUPRAN Engineering Services Ltd were also abducted during the incident.

However, within less than 72 hours of the abduction, Nigerian Army troops successfully rescued 13 of the victims, including the abducted labourers. Jacob Hassan, the father of one of the victims still in captivity, Naomi, confirmed the recent release during a telephone conversation with AIT News.

The rescued students have reportedly been transported to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where they are receiving medical care in an undisclosed hospital. Notably, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, played a direct role in negotiating their release.

Some of the freed victims have been able to speak with their parents, offering a glimmer of hope and relief to their families. Family members of two of the released students, Nasira and Zainab, have also confirmed the positive development.
