Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan was in the midst of filming a Netflix documentary at the time of his death earlier this week at age 71.
According to CNN, the previously unannounced project, produced in partnership with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), was designed to chronicle Hogan’s iconic life and career—both inside and outside the wrestling ring. Despite his sudden passing, sources close to the production say filming is expected to continue.
An insider revealed that the documentary had been in development since early 2024. Over 20 hours of exclusive, never-before-seen interviews with Hogan had already been recorded, alongside 30 hours of additional footage. The project was created with Hogan’s full cooperation.
“People will see a side of him they haven’t seen before,” a source told CNN.
Although no release date has been announced, the filmmakers are currently revising parts of the documentary in light of Hogan’s death. Cameras are also expected to be on-site at WWE SmackDown this Friday to capture a tribute segment.
Born Terry Bollea, Hogan rose to become the face of professional wrestling, helping to transform WWE into a global entertainment powerhouse. His charisma and larger-than-life persona during the 1980s and 1990s made him one of the most recognizable figures in sports entertainment history.
Hogan passed away Thursday in Clearwater, Florida, after suffering cardiac arrest. Authorities have confirmed that no foul play is suspected and that a standard investigation is ongoing.
Hogan’s groundbreaking success paved the way for future wrestling stars—such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cena—to transition from the ring to careers in film and television.
The Netflix documentary is directed by Bryan Storkel and produced by Connor Schell’s studio, Words + Pictures, in collaboration with WWE. The project was initially reported by Puck.
