A three-storey private student hostel, Pentagon Lodge, located in Izzangbo Ohankwu Village near Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, collapsed following days of continuous rainfall. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Eyewitnesses at the scene confirmed that a section of the building gave way, burying students’ personal belongings under the debris. While no serious injuries occurred, several students experienced shock and distress due to the sudden collapse.
In immediate response, the Ebonyi State Government sealed off the affected building and surrounding structures pending structural integrity assessments. All occupants were ordered to evacuate to avoid further risk.
Leading a government delegation to the site, the State Commissioner for Capital City Development, Chief Sunday Ekechi Inyima, called for urgent investigations into the cause of the collapse. He confirmed that multiple agencies—including the Ministry of Capital City Development, the Ministry of Human Capital Development, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ikwo Local Government Council, and AE-FUNAI management—are coordinating efforts to provide temporary shelter for the displaced students.
AE-FUNAI Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Elom, expressed serious concern over the rising number of substandard private hostels near the university, many of which, he noted, are constructed without proper regulatory oversight.
“This unfortunate incident highlights the urgent need for strict enforcement of building standards,” Elom said. “Only properly designed and professionally supervised structures should be approved—especially those intended to house students.”
He praised the swift response by the state government and gave thanks that no lives were lost. He also sympathized with the affected students and acknowledged the loss of property.
Professor Elom urged the government to carry out a full-scale investigation and ensure accountability, stating that anyone found responsible—whether regulators, engineers, or contractors—must face consequences to prevent similar tragedies.
He further assured the displaced students of the university’s full support and directed them to work with the Student Union Government (SUG) and the Dean of Student Affairs for proper documentation and immediate assistance.
As of the time of this report, emergency personnel remain on-site conducting safety inspections. Residents in nearby buildings have been advised to remain vigilant.
