Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded to remarks made by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, who suggested that Obi must seek clearance before visiting Edo.
Speaking during a ceremony at Christ the King College (CKC) in Onitsha—his alma mater—Obi dismissed the notion, stating clearly that he has no fear of visiting any part of the country.
“I am not afraid of visiting any state in Nigeria, particularly when the purpose is to support causes that contribute to nation-building, such as education, health, and poverty alleviation,” Obi said.
The occasion marked the presentation of a ₦50 million cheque, donated by Obi and other CKC alumni, to support infrastructure development at the historic institution, which was founded in 1932 and counts among its alumni several prominent Nigerians, including Dr. Peter Odili and former Governors Willie Obiano and Peter Obi himself.
Obi used the opportunity to address the recent controversy surrounding his visit to Benin, which he said had been unnecessarily politicized.
“I went to Benin to invest in a better life for the people. If they have good doctors and nurses, life will be better for them. What I expect the governor to do is to complement efforts aimed at improving society,” he said.
Obi emphasized that his visits across Nigeria are always in service of development-focused causes and not political grandstanding.
