Liberian President Suspends Over 450 Officials for Not Declaring Assets

Liberian President Joseph Boakai, committed to combating corruption, has suspended over 450 government-appointed officials for failing to declare their assets.

The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) identified 457 officials, including the minister responsible for the budget and various ambassadors, who did not submit their asset declarations by the November deadline, as mandated by the country’s code of conduct for public officials.

These officials have been “suspended for one month without pay or until they submit the required declarations,” according to the president’s office.

Liberian law obligates public officials to declare their assets upon assuming and vacating office.

Boakai, who was elected in November 2023, “remains committed to good governance, integrity, and the rule of law,” the statement added.

“Non-compliance with asset declaration requirements undermines the national fight against corruption and accountability,” it emphasized.

Political analyst Abdullah Kiatamba called the move “good news,” expressing hope that the president would continue this approach for the country’s benefit.

Liberia is ranked 135th out of 180 countries on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index.
