NFF Refutes Claims of Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle’s Contract Termination

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed rumors surrounding the termination of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle’s contract.

Reports had circulated suggesting that Chelle’s future with the Nigerian national team was in doubt following disappointing results in the March 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which left the country’s hopes hanging by a thread.

However, a senior NFF official has labeled these reports as “fake news.” The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Punch that the NFF’s executive committee has not held any discussions regarding the coach’s contract. Chelle is currently en route to Europe, where he plans to meet with Nigerian players and potentially persuade other eligible talents to represent the country.

“There is nothing like that,” the board member said. “As a board member, I can confirm there has been no discussion regarding the coach’s contract. It’s all fake news.”

Among those Chelle plans to meet in Europe is Arsenal’s highly-rated teenager, Ethan Nwaneri. Nwaneri’s chance of switching his international allegiance to Nigeria has been strengthened after being left out of England’s squad during the recent international break.

“The coach is going to Europe and will meet with several players, including Nwaneri,” the source added.

Chelle, who was appointed in January on a two-year contract with the possibility of renewal, has overseen just two matches so far. Under his guidance, Nigeria secured a 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali, followed by a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo.
