The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Jubril Emilagba, has ordered a ban on sleeping within Oyingbo Market, citing rising security concerns and the need to protect lives and property.
Emilagba announced the directive on Friday during a security meeting with market executives and members, describing it as part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety across markets in the local government.
He said the prohibition on overnight stays is a preventive measure aimed at curbing criminal activities and safeguarding traders and their goods. “No one is permitted to sleep in the market. This directive is strictly for security reasons, to prevent criminal elements from exploiting the environment,” Emilagba stated, stressing that markets should remain centres for lawful commercial activity, not overnight habitation.
The chairman added that the local government would work closely with relevant security agencies and market leadership to ensure compliance. “We are committed to keeping Oyingbo Market safe for traders, customers, and residents. Security agencies will assist in enforcing this directive,” he said.
Emilagba also highlighted the importance of ongoing engagement with market stakeholders, noting that collaboration with traders is key to achieving a secure and orderly market environment. He encouraged traders to register for the National Identification Number and the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, emphasizing their role in identity management and security planning. He further urged eligible traders to participate in the ongoing All Progressives Congress e-registration exercise to promote grassroots political inclusion.
Responding on behalf of traders, the Women Leader of Oyingbo Market, Basira Balogun, expressed support for the move, describing it as timely. “We understand the security implications and will work with the local government to ensure traders comply,” she said.
