The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with alleged threats to kidnap and kill a 50-year-old resident of Seni Salla Village in Saki and members of his family.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, September 21, 2026.
According to Ayanlade, the suspect was arrested following an intelligence-led operation after the victim, Metu Jilani, reported receiving threatening phone calls from unknown persons on September 13.
The callers allegedly claimed they had been contracted to kidnap and kill Jilani and his family, warning that any attempt to flee would result in the abduction of his younger brother.
The suspects subsequently demanded money from the victim and allegedly instructed him to sell his two houses and transfer the proceeds to them or face abduction.
They reportedly provided an account belonging to a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator in Kwara State and directed Jilani to deposit ₦3 million into the account.
Instead, the complainant transferred ₦100,000, which police said provided an investigative lead.
The PPRO said two men, identified as Hantsi Abdullahi of Boseperu, Kosubosu, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, and Hantsi Liman, went to the POS operator to withdraw the money.
Abdullahi was apprehended while attempting to collect the funds, while Liman escaped from the scene.
Police said Abdullahi was subsequently attacked by an angry mob before officers intervened and took him to a hospital for medical treatment. He is currently receiving treatment.
The command said efforts were ongoing to arrest Liman and determine the full circumstances surrounding the threats, including the identities and roles of other persons who may be connected to the case.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has ordered a thorough investigation and directed sustained efforts to apprehend all persons found to be connected with the alleged offence.
The command also urged members of the public to promptly report threats, suspicious movements and other actionable information to the police, noting that timely reporting is critical to effective intervention and the prevention of criminal activities.
