Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North and former Governor of Edo State, has called on the newly affirmed Governor Monday Okpebholo to launch an investigation into his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, over alleged mismanagement of state funds and questionable infrastructure projects.
Oshiomhole made the call while celebrating the recent Supreme Court ruling, which upheld Okpebholo’s election victory. The five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Lawal Garba, dismissed the petition filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo, ruling that he failed to substantiate claims of over-voting, electoral malpractice, or non-compliance with the Electoral Act. The court affirmed that Okpebholo was duly elected by the majority of lawful votes.
Addressing party supporters following the judgment, Oshiomhole declared it was time to “rescue Edo State” through transparency and accountability, particularly by scrutinizing the previous administration.
“Now that the Supreme Court judgment has been delivered, Governor Okpebholo has the time and authority to look into that hotel project where Edo State funds—running into tens of billions—were allegedly diverted,” Oshiomhole stated.
He also took aim at the quality of infrastructure developed under Obaseki’s tenure, contrasting it with projects from his own administration.
“The roads constructed during Obaseki’s time have washed away, unlike the ones I built, which still stand strong today,” he said.
Oshiomhole went further to challenge Obaseki to publicly account for his tenure and engage directly with the people.
“Now that you have the time, Your Excellency, go for the second rematch. Let Obaseki come out of hiding to answer the people. To rescue Edo means you must investigate. How did we get here? So that we don’t make the same mistakes again.”
He also extended an invitation to Obaseki for a symbolic public walk through Benin City.
“I challenge Obaseki to join me on the streets of Benin. As former governors, let’s walk together and see who truly made an impact on the lives of our people.”
Oshiomhole concluded by offering prayers for Governor Okpebholo, wishing him wisdom, strength, and resolve to steer Edo State forward.
